Obituary of Kurt William Hernandez

Kurt William Hernandez was born June 30, 1963 in Westwood California to Xaivier “Frank” Hernandez and Edith Hernandez. He went to be with the Lord on the night of January 18th, 2024 after a year long courageous battle with cancer. He was only 60 years old at the time of his passing.

He leaves behind his family, wife Emily, daughters Rebekah, Shaylene, Kirsten, Lauren and son Joseph who are profoundly saddened at his passing. He also leaves his brother Xavier Hernandez and siblings Suzie, Danio, Amber, Andrew and step brother David.  He also had 4 granddaughters, Katherine, Gabriella, Julia, Clara, and his son-in-law Joseph Baljet.

Kurt grew up in the San Fernando Valley and Upland. He loved to listen to rock music on his walkman while on his first job as a newspaper carrier and riding the bus or walking to his job at Danish American Market.

Kurt spent many happy summers and weekends in Hacienda Heights with his grandparents and extended family.

Kurt went to Monroe high school and graduated from Van Nuys High school in 1981.

Kurt was baptized into the Catholic faith and reconnected with the Lord in 1993 after the birth of his daughter Shaylene. In 2005 Kurt and Emily joined Couples for Christ and again reconnected with God in a new and deeper way, enjoying the fellowship and their journey of faith.

In 2013 they went to the Church at Rocky Peak and their relationship with the Lord expanded further, and they created lasting relationships with life group members.

He was very proud to join the US Navy in 1982. He served three years and did a tour on the USS Ranger 1983-1984.  He used his training in the Navy serving his country as a Navy reservist, and later as a cable engineer in the Santa Clarita valley.  He also attended Pierce College where he studied drafting. Later he continued his education at Moorpark College.

Kurt moved from the San Fernando Valley to Simi Valley in 1987 after getting an electronic technician position in Simi Valley. He worked as an electronic technician until 1989.

Kurt and Emily met in 1986 and were married in May 1989. They purchased Simi Beauty Supply in August of that year. Kurt computerized the beauty supply and enjoyed serving the community of Simi Valley. He, along with Emily and later their children, operated Simi Beauty Supply until August 2017 at which time they closed the store.

In 2005 Kurt took a part time job at CVS Pharmacy. He became a full time employee and worked at Simi Valley, Woodranch, Thousand Oaks and Newbury Park stores. He enjoyed serving the public and striving to better each store he worked for. He worked for CVS until 2023 when he was diagnosed with cancer.

Kurt enjoyed all kinds of music from Rush to U2 and Journey to Clannad, and everything in between. He would frequently watch documentaries about his favorite rock bands and spent a lot of time relistening to his favorite albums and recorded concerts.

Kurt also enjoyed spending time on the beach, both by himself and with his family, driving his Dodge Challenger, meditation, and spending time at the Simi Valley town center, walking or relaxing in his car listening to music. From an early age, his favorite football team was the Miami Dolphins. His favorite college football team was the USC Trojans.

Kurt will forever be remembered for loving his family and striving for perfection in everything he did. He was a very passionate person and although sometimes the world disappointed him, he always had a plan to move forward and try something new, a new passion project or way to support his family. He was a very intelligent man and he will be remembered for his deeply thoughtful and lively conversations. He will be missed as an invaluable husband, friend and father.

Celebration of life will be held Saturday February 24th at Grace Church XXXX Avenida Simi Simi Valley Ca 93065. 11:00 am. Followed by fellowship and remembrance.
