Obituary of Marilyn Asplund

Please share a memory of Marilyn to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Marilyn Carol Hayes Asplund was born March 9, 1942 and passed away January 25, 2013. Marilyn was the eldest of two daughters born to Vernon Ralph Hayes and Marjorie Lucille Israelson. Daughter of a Navy captain, she grew up in various places around the United States. She graduated from Los Cerritos High School in the Bay Area, then attended Brigham Young University and graduated from University of Utah in Salt Lake City. She married Leon Ray Asplund on October 20, 1962. They lived in Utah until 1968 when they moved to Granada Hills. Then they moved to Simi Valley in 1969 where they resided for the remainder of their lives. She was a high school teacher for more than 35 years, most of that time spent at Taft High School in Woodland Hills. She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. At the time of her death, she was serving as President of her ward's Relief Society. Throughout her life she served in many different callings including callings in Cub Scouts, Primary, Young Women's and as a music chorister. She had also served as a worker in the Los Angeles LDS Temple for 11 years. She is survived by her sister (Jeanne Katherine Hayes Grover), three sons (Craig Leon, Richard Mark, David Jared), one daughter (Christine Dawn {McGraw}), 19 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, 2 stepsons and 5 step-granddaughters. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband and one grandson (Geoffrey Allen Asplund). She spent her life in service to her family, friends, students and co-workers. She was generous and loving to everyone. She loved her family unconditionally. She loved the temple. She was taken from us too soon. None of us were prepared for her passing, but we have faith that she is having a happy reunion with her loved ones in the afterlife. A viewing is scheduled at the LDS Church building located at 5028 Cochran St. in Simi Valley on Thursday, January 31 at 9 AM with services held at 10 AM, followed by burial at Oakwood Cemetery in Chatsworth.
