Sherril Hammerquist

Obituary of Sherril M. Hammerquist

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of our loving mother and grandmother Sherril M. Hammerquist. She left us on May 20,2023 at the age of 75, a resident of Moorpark, CA for more than 30 years.

Sherril was born the third child of Jesse and Bessie Jane Garrett on December 30, 1947, in Glendale CA. Her family moved to Santa Barbara when she was just two years old. She was a true California girl who loved her days living in the small beach town and driving a little convertible. After graduating from San Marcos High School in 1966 she went to secretarial school. It was working as a secretary at Raytheon that she met the love of her life, Lee Hammerquist. They were married on April 22, 1972, and celebrated 48 years together.

Sherril enjoyed people, embodied kindness, and took a genuine interest in everyone she met.  She never held a grudge and maintained a positive outlook on life.  Not one for gossip or speaking ill of others, she always helped family, friends, and neighbors whenever and however possible.

She was an avid reader and enjoyed a good mystery novel. She had a wonderful sense of style and color and one of her favorite things to do was paint and decorate her home. She had an amazing talent for gardening and a beautiful backyard to admire. She loved birds, especially hummingbirds. We know her feathered friends will miss all her well-stocked feeders.

More than anything, Sherril loved being a mother and then a grandma. The collages of smiling, laughing photos on her walls and in her photo albums are a testament to that.  Her grandchildren AJ and Erin were blessed to have her so close throughout their lives.  She attended every sport, dance, and school event she could.

Sherril is survived by her son Erik Hammerquist of Simi Valley California, daughter-in-law Traci Hammerquist, grandson AJ Hammerquist and granddaughter Erin Hammerquist. Stepdaughter Alison Hammerquist Taylor of Canada, granddaughters Alessandra Bifano, Genevieve Taylor and Madelaine Taylor Patwary. Sister Dorla Turner and her loving family. Numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews who she loved dearly. She is preceded in death by her husband Lee Hammerquist and brother and sister-in-law Bill and Sharon Garrett.

A Celebration of Life has been scheduled for Sunday August 13, 2023 at the Wood Ranch Country Club, 301 Wood Ranch Parkway, Simi Valley CA 93065. The luncheon and tribute will be from 12:00 to 4:00pm. Additional information will be provided via email invitation so if you would like to attend, please email us directly at traci_hammerquist@yahoo.com.
