Obituary of Grace Cousill Wong
Please share a memory of Grace to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Grace C. Wong (Yee), a devoted wife and mother of seven children, passed away Wednesday evening, July 22, 2015. She was born on January 28, 1928, to Paul and Din Bo Yee in Albany, New York. As a toddler, she went to China with her brothers Daniel and Grant but returned, shortly, in 1930. In 1932, the entire family, including Mee, Elizabeth, Daniel, Grant, and Paul, Jr., moved to San Diego. Her parents would live the rest of their lives there.
Grace graduated San Diego High School in 1946, and went on to Los Angeles to become a registered nurse at the Methodist Hospital of Southern California by 1950.
While there, she met her future husband, Stanton. They married in 1951, and had their first son, Russell, the following year. Stan Alan, Terence, Urban, and Valerie then followed. Urban passed away due to illness at the age of three. That was a tragic event for Grace, but she would go on to have two more children, Wendy and Xavier.
Raising her family on a managed budget, that included music lessons and setting aside money for future education, was very challenging. Even though they didn't play musical instruments, both she and Stanton encouraged their children to do so. They believed that music and a college education were important, and Grace succeeded in achieving these goals.
After her sons and daughters were grown, Grace continued to enjoy spending time with children, babysitting for friends and family. She also volunteered her time watching kids at a local church. Children were her joy.
During this time, she and Stanton also traveled the world and went to many foreign and far away places. She enjoyed seeing historic landmarks and meeting people of different cultures.
Grace's upbeat spirit will be missed. She will be remembered for being a loyal, loving, and caring person.
Grace will be missed most by her husband of 64 years, Stanton. She is survived by her brothers, Grant (Lila) and Paul, Jr. (Yoshi); sons Russell (Ilene), Stan Alan (Karen), Terence (Natalie), and Xavier; daughters Valerie (Larry) and Wendy; grandchildren Mike (Kyra), Steve, Jill, Shannon (Mark), Andy, Ali, and Adam; and great-grandchildren Emmalyn, Merrick, and Calvin.
